Copyscape, provided by Indigo Stream Technologies Ltd, is an
online service for detecting online plagiarism, by checking
to see whether duplicated text content, appears elsewhere on
the web. The software lets you detect duplicate content and
check if your articles are original. Duplicate content can
be detected even if only 3-4 lines long.
Copyscape is, however, not able to determine who copied
who, or whether the copying is authorized or unauthorized.
The users of the system are left to determine this. While
it is an excellent place to begin, more due diligence will
be required to find copyright infringements.
Using Copyscape is simple, just enter your website address
and press ‘Search’. Copyscape uses Google API. to search the
entire world wide web to find copies of your content. You
are shown the top results that are similar to your page.
By clicking on a result you are shown a word-by-word
comparison with the content of your site.
Copyscape provides three levels of service There is a free
service and two paid services, Copyscape Premium and
CopySentry.
For most users the free service is sufficient. The free
service provided by Copyscape allows a limited number of
uses per ip per month, after which it charges a very nominal
fee, for each usage. If a website owner is hiring freelance
writers, it is very advisable to check the supplied content
to ensure its originality.
The Premium service has a more advanced plagiarism detection
system, and also provides other services and tools as well.
Premium service users purchase batches of searches at a
very low price each, and they remain valid for one year.
CopySentry is a service which, for a small fee, will
continuously monitor a website watching for any duplication
of that site. If plagiarized content is detected, Copysentry
will email the owner to inform them, thereby providing a
valuable defense for entire pages and/or websites against
content theft.
Duplication of content will always happen, but with tools
like Copyscape there is a way of protecting your content
and website. Copyscape even allows you to register your
articles, etc., with them. By putting their banner on your
article, you let it be known that your work is protected by
Copyscape.
