Bad Neighborhood: Should You Be a Part of It or Not?
|
Building links between your site and other sites and vice versa, is a natural process that occurs with any website or blog. Any site owner that is trying to provide more of a service for his readers, will begin to provide links to other sites, that could benefit those readers.
Likewise, if you provide valuable content on your website or blog, other sites will link to you. They will do this because they are trying to provide a service for their readers, by linking to your site, and they believe that linking to your site is a good way to provide more information for their readers. This is why links from other sites to yours will help to increase your SEO. Each link from another site to your site is viewed by the search engines like a vote for your blog or website – usually. Have you ever heard the saying, "You will be known by the company you keep?" If you spend all of your time around law breakers and hoodlums, you will be viewed as one of them. The same logic applies to websites. If you have a lot of links from other sites pointing to yours, this is a good thing. It shows that you are well-respected by other site owners and that they consider your site worth linking to! You have no control over which sites point to yours. Anyone can choose to have a link on their site that points to your site. The search engines know this. On the other hand, you have complete control over the people that you link to from your site. The search engines know this, as well. If you are requested to place a link on your site to someone else’s, you need to consider this decision carefully. Outbound links can be disastrous for the SEO of your site. If you have too many outbound links, this can decrease your SEO. Having too many outbound links can raise a red flag with search engines, because they may think that your site is too "spammy." A good rule of thumb is to only have two or three links per blog post – if that many. Make sure you do not have one page that is nothing but links to different sites. This can be viewed by search engines as a link farm and can be heavily penalized or de-indexed. Another mistake that you can make is to link to a bad site. This can be a site that the search engines consider to have a spam domain. It can also be a site that is a link farm.
