There are many link building techniques that you can use, in order to help increase the number of backlinks you have. Each time a site places a link to your site from theirs, it is almost like casting a vote for your site. The more votes you have, the better – usually.

But there are some sites that will request reciprocal links. In fact, some sites will even require that you place a link on your site to theirs, before they will place a link on their site to yours. This uses the "I’ll scratch your back if you scratch mine" approach.

There are positive and negative aspects to reciprocal links.

On the positive side, any link to your site from another site could be a good thing.

However, there are many negative aspects to reciprocal links.

First, Google does not look as favorably on reciprocal links as it does on naturally occurring links that are one-way. If a site is providing good content, then it is a natural assumption that there will be other sites that want to link to that site – without needing a reciprocal link. Having reciprocal links indicates some sort of collusion between the two sites, not necessarily that both sites have equally good content.

Second, many sites that require reciprocal links are not the type of site that you want to link to in the first place. Many of these sites are link farms or simply spammy. It is never a good idea to keep bad company, and if you link to the wrong site you can find your site dropped from Google quickly.

Finally, patience is a virtue when it comes to creating backlinks. Becoming impatient might help your ranking in the short term, but in the long term it can be a disaster. It is much better to let your site age naturally and develop legitimate backlinks along the way.

While some site owners practice giving and receiving reciprocal links, there are numerous negative aspects to it. It is probably much better to simply let nature take its course and develop backlinks this way.

PageRank is a system of algorithms, that assigns a value to the different pages on the Internet, in order to determine the importance or the relevance of those pages. This system was developed by Sergey Brin and Larry Page (the founders of Google) and it is unique to Google; however, other search engines will use a different ranking system in order to determine the order of their search engine results.

Many website owners wonder how many backlinks they need in order to achieve a particular PageRank. There is no definite answer to this question, because PageRank depends on a large number of factors – not just backlinks.

However, there are a few things that can be determined to usually improve your PageRank.

First, you need to increase the number of back links to your site each month. The reasoning behind this is that if you are providing valuable content, other sites will naturally link to you, because it provides a good service to their readers. If you are providing good content on a regular basis, your natural backlinks will increase each month.

Second, you need to make sure that the sites that you are linking to are quality sites. Although you cannot control who links to you, you can certainly control the sites that you link to. If you have a site linking to you that is considered a spam site, or a link farm, this can have a negative effect on your PR; however, if you are found linking to one of these spam sites or link farms, it can have a drastically negative effect on your PR – possibly even getting your site de-indexed.

Third, if you can have a website with a higher PR link to you, then it can raise your PR. If you have sites with a lower PR link to you, then you can have a negative effect on your PR.

While keeping in mind that PR and how you get a higher PR is still somewhat shrouded in mystery, if you keep these three tips in mind you will be on your way to increasing your PageRank.

Here are some tips to help you build links that will get you to the top of Google.

1. Quality is much more important than quantity. You can have 1000 links from sites that are worthless or de-indexed, and they will not count nearly as much as 10 links to your site from websites, that are considered authority sites or sites with a good reputation.

Do not fall into the temptation of purchasing 1000 links from some fly by night company – take the time to build quality links so that your site will rise in Google rankings naturally.

2. Make sure that you obtain links gradually. Do not raise any red flags by acquiring hundreds or thousands of links in a few days. It is not worth any amount of money that you might pay, if it ends up getting your site dropped in Google – and possibly de indexed.

3. Use forum posting in order to get your website linked to from their site. Be sure that you follow all of the forum rules and that you are not spamming the site in order to get your link on there. You need to be a productive, contributing member of that online community, in order to have meaningful links from that forum

4. Create remarkable posts. People will naturally link to any blog post that provides fantastic information, stirring controversy, laugh out loud humor, or "how to" instructions. If you regularly post and provide this type of material, you will quickly be known as someone to keep an eye on, and you will dramatically increase your visitor count. Once your traffic and the backlinks increase, your Google rank will follow.

These are just a few tips in order to help you naturally generate more backlinks and hasten your rise with Google. Remember to be consistent with your efforts, and you will see your backlinks increase every month. A steady increase is much more valuable than a skyrocketing increase that quickly drops because you have used unreliable methods in order to increase your rank.
